New Look Clean carpet cleaning today in Shenstone near Lichfield, Staffordshire

While we were there the client asked us to look at some ‘strange’ marks that they had around the perimeter of one of the bedroom carpets.

We see this a lot and very often the customer has no idea whats happening.

These are ‘draught marks’ or ‘filtration marks’. In this case, when the carpet was fitted, the tool the carpet fitter uses to grip the carpet to stretch it to the gripper, has actually pierced the backing of the carpet. The tool should normally just grip it but sometimes it can go through the backing and cause holes.

As the air under the floor boards flows around it will pick up soiling as it goes. The air flow will find places to escape – in this case the holes in the carpet, and as the dirty air flows though the carpet the fibres filter out the soiling.

This causes the marking – so its actually coming from beneath the carpet until its visible on top. It can take months or years to show so normally too long to notice there has been a problem with the fitting. Obviously it looks worse on lighter coloured carpets.

While we were the cleaning carpets, we just quickly spot cleaned out these marks in the bedroom for the client as well. Unfortunately, without lifting the carpet and blocking the ‘holes’ the marking will return, but normally this will take a long time to reoccur so its worthwhile improving the carpet and cleaning out the draught/filter marking.

Customer very pleased – she had wondered if one of her guests had walked something in so she was happy to finally understand what was going on!
